The dominant of the dominant

Music theory, Secondary dominants, 12 minutes

V of V: the supertonic chord made major, its raised 3rd leading up to the dominant.

A dominant for the dominant

Chord V leads to I. In the same way a chord can lead to V: the chord that is V in the dominant key. It is built on the supertonic but made major, so its 3rd is the sharpened subdominant, the leading note of the dominant key. It is labelled V/V.
