Unit 7, Lesson 2 of 6
Brainlag Music

Planning a long bass

Music theory, Figured bass, 12 minutes

Reading a longer figured bass in advance: the cadences and the sevenths marked before a note is written.

Plan first

Before writing any note:

  1. Name every chord from its bass and figures.
  2. Mark the cadences, where each phrase ends.
  3. Mark every 7th: it must fall by step to the next chord.
  4. Mark any six-four: cadential, passing or auxiliary.
