Resolving augmented sixths
Where each augmented sixth goes: the Italian and French straight to V, the German through Ic.
Opening out
Every augmented sixth resolves the same way at its core: the bass falls a semitone to the dominant and the sharpened subdominant rises a semitone to the dominant.
| Chord | Goes to | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Italian sixth | V | its doubled tonic moves to the leading note and the supertonic |
| French sixth | V | its supertonic stays as the 5th of V |
| German sixth | Ic, then V | straight to V it makes consecutive 5ths |
